COOLAPSE

Foused around reducing unnecessary storage, this cooler combines hard shell and soft shell benefts to flat pack and allow for easy carry after all drinks its holding are finished or more space concious storing. Its full form comfortably fits 24 cans securely without leaking.

Problem Statement

Traditional coolers are bulky, cumbersome, difficult to store, and occupy valuable space during transport and between uses. Once the drinks inside have been consumed at an event, the cooler itself becomes an additional burden to carry and manage. While soft-shell coolers offer greater flexibility, they often compromise on cooling performance and provide less than half the cooling duration than a hardshell cooler.

Project Brief

Flat-pack cooler designed to prioritize compactness, portability, and ease of storage while not compromising on performance.

Streamlined construction allows it to be assembled quickly in just a few simple steps without tools or assistance.

Thick layer of insulation is integrated into each surface to provide reliable temperature retention while still securing a watertight seal.

Rapid Prototype Ideation

Iterations focused on a balance of rigidity, a water-tight seal, and ability to flat pack. I experimented with having individual locking walls with rubber gaskets, flexible corners which maintain wall thickness and provide flexibility in bending direction, as well as a single-body origami-inspired form.

Prototype Iteration

I decided on a soft and hard shell integration form which ensures a water right seal while still maintaining structure.
